Trini fashion designer brings Caribbean Ethos to Clarks footwear brand

Photo: Loop.com

The Trinidad-born Joshua Joseph and the American designer Ronnie Fieg of the Classic shoemaker Clarks Originals have partnered to design an exclusive shoe for Clarks Originals. Joseph of the New York-based fashion brand Rebels to Dons is the first Caribbean designer to create his own Clark’s silhouette. According to Joseph, this collaboration marks an opportunity to give ownership to Caribbean people as Clarks Shoes have remained the preferred footwear brand on the island for decades. Besides, the brand has released many Caribbean-inspired collections over the years. But, none of its collections have been designed by people with direct roots in the Caribbean. For designing the shoes, Joseph took inspiration from the late 1970s and 80s when a new wave of Caribbean immigrants imported their Clarks to New York street style. So, the designer reimagined Fieg’s Clarks maycliffe into a mule. This inspiration is to connect the city and the islands through style. Made of natural tan nubuck leather, the new shoes incorporate details for day-to-night style. You can wear the shoes for casual daily style and shift them for night one when needed. The shoes come with two removable fringe straps, one in a matching tan nubuck, and the other nubuck brun. Labeled the Rebels to Dons x Clarks maycliffe mule, the shoes have been released in a limited edition run. They will be sold exclusively online via the Rebels to Dons website.
